Project U2B: Year 5

Project U2B – Year 5 Numeracy is an online learning program that develops the numeracy and maths skills of the selected students.

The aim is to extend students who are already capable at numeracy and help them go ‘from good to great’. Students have been given this opportunity because previous test results indicate that a targeted program could help them reach a Band 7 or 8 (the Upper Two Bands) in their Year 5 NAPLAN Numeracy Test in 2013. Equally important though, is our aim to promote a greater appreciation and enjoyment of numeracy and give students the opportunity to experience a high quality online learning program.

The program is delivered by Samford State School in partnership with Education Queensland’s Metropolitan Region and Brisbane School of Distance Education. Many students from state schools in the Metropolitan Region are taking part. Lessons are delivered over 9 weeks from the week beginning Monday, February 25 until Monday May 14, 2013. There is no cost to the students for participation.

Students attend one 60-70 minute web conference each Wednesday of the 9 week course at school in a group of 10. The program is delivered by an online teacher trained by Brisbane School of Distance Education and the group is supported and supervised by a staff member at our school.

Students also complete approximately 20-40 minutes of online learning activities each week via a Virtual Classroom.
