Junior String Ensemble is comprised of students in Year 3 in their first year of learning an instrument. They start with a Beginners' Music Camp at the beginning of the year where they learn how to set up and care for their instrument, as well as playing music containing up to five different notes. A great introduction to learning an instrument!

Junior String Ensemble commences in Term 3.
In 2020, Junior String Ensemble will rehearse on Friday 2nd break in the Music Room.

Junior String Ensemble Director: Ms Gundi Kariks

Senior String Ensemble is for students in Year 4, 5 and 6, continuing their music journey. Students perform a range of engaging and challenging music, with many Australian pieces. Music Fest and Fanfare are calendar highlights for this ensemble.

Senior String Ensemble rehearses Friday mornings from 7:45 am in the Hall.

Process of Selection (Strings)

  1. A test of musical ability is given to all students in Year 2 in October.  Students are listed in order of merit and a cut off point is established.
  2. A demonstration of Upper String instruments is given by senior music students in the school.
  3. The classroom teacher's knowledge of the student is sought for suitability of student to be involved in the program.
  4. Instrumental Music specialists conduct practical test of the short listed students.
  5. Final lists of successful students are collated with the preferences of each student.
  6. Parents are notified.

The parents/guardians of the selected students are invited to a meeting to gain first hand knowledge of the program from the music staff.  Parental and student commitment is gained. Instruments are allocated by the beginning of the following year.  In February of the following year, classes commence.

Beginning students are expected to attend a Beginners Music Camp held for all beginning students in the Ferny Grove Cluster.  There is a nominal fee associated with this camp.

Students in an instrumental Music Program at another school, when transferred to this school, will be given a high priority for placement in the program, subject to a satisfactory audition and satisfactory report from the Instrumental Music Instructor, the class teacher and the availability of a position.

Please note that once a child takes up the option of learning a strings instrument in Year 3, it is assumed that they will continue through to the end of Year 6 with this instrument.  They will not be given the opporuntity to learn another instrument in Year 5.  When students change from one instrument to another, this creates a huge problem with the balancing of the ensembles and therefore this process can not be allowed to occur.
