Children in Years 2
to 6 have swimming/aquatic activities in terms 1 and 4 (Year 1 children
only do swimming in term 4). More information on swimming below.
Sport
The major aims of sport at
Samford Sate School are enjoyment, maximum participation and skill
development. Interhouse Sports Carnivals for swimming, cross
country and athletics are conducted in both Early Phase (1 - 3), and Middle
Phase (4 - 6) divisions. School teams compete
at District Sports Competitions and in recent years have
been very successful.
Many students go on to
representative honours at district, regional and state level, in both
individual and team sports.
During terms 1 and 2,
Year 5 & 6 students participate in a physical
activities program through Interschool Sports.
Swimming
In term 4, all children from P-6 will participate in a Swimming program, provided by Little Big Swim at Samford Swimming Pool. The team at Little Big Swim are made up of both highly experienced Swim Teachers and nationally accredited Swim Coaches so, wherever your child’s swimming abilities are, we will meet them where they are. We aim to not overwhelm OR underwhelm them. Depending on their age and ability, students will participate one of the following programs:
- Foundations (typically Prep – year 2)
- Participants
at foundation level will emerge from the program with an understanding of
water safety and how it applies to their own strengths and weaknesses and
emerging water independence, water survival skills and emerging freestyle
and backstroke competencies.
- AcQuisition and consolidation (typically
year 3 – 4)
- Participants
will rehearse survival stroke, freestyle and backstroke. They will begin
to apply water safety concepts and begin personal survival and rescue
skills.
- Application (typically year 5 – 6)
- Participants
in this group will cover all the National Swimming and Water Safety
Framework and move quickly onto adding competitive elements to their
stroke.
Lessons will take place
during the school day, once per week,
for 30 minutes, for 6 weeks.
